Root canal treatment removes the infected nerve tissue, disinfects the canal system and seals it. Working under a microscope with rubber-dam isolation is what separates a predictable outcome from a repeat treatment: canals that are missed are the main reason cases fail.
Persistent throbbing, sensitivity to heat or an abscess means the pulp is infected. Antibiotics suppress the symptoms without treating the cause; only cleaning the canal system resolves it.

Aftercare
A root-treated back tooth needs a crown, not a filling — unprotected, it frequently splits within a few years. Do not defer that step.
